The USA branch of the International Social Service (ISS) recently published on its website a unique and informative training for experts and practitioners working with displaced children.

UNICEF developed the Children of the Move Training Program in cooperation with international child welfare experts from International Social Service and academic partners from the University of Cape Town and the University of Belgrade. It also received technical inputs from UNHCR. The ISS is one of the leading non-governmental organizations working with migrant people and has been assisting families willing to reunite with children since the years of its foundation in 1924.

The training is worth the attention of the readers of this blog for a number of reasons: it is one of the very few examples (perhaps the first) of training of global reach, that is not focused on a specific legal order or jurisdiction, thus it is potentially applicable and relevant for experts and practitioners in Europe and beyond.

The training has also been developed as a cooperation between international organizations, academia, and civil society, representing also an interesting good practice that can perhaps be reproduced at a smaller scale and adapted to specific situations. Also, the training material is provided for free to everyone who fills in the form available on this webpage.

The course, which can be attended remotely and asynchronously, is divided into 5 days, each of them corresponding to around 6 hours of training. Day 1 is about “Understanding Children on the Move”, Day 2 is on “Actors, Case Management Models and Identification”, Day 3 is about “Assessment”, Day 4 is on “Case planning and Service Delivery” and Day 5 is about “Implementing case plans”.

Every module is also arranged in different sections, where the attendees can learn about the psychological, social, political, and legal aspects of working with displaced children, thus making this training a unique example of interdisciplinarity in the field.
